BYU Nursing Class of 2006: Where I am, What I'm Doing..

Tamara Locken spent her summer back home inCalifornia, visiting with family and studying for the NCLEX.

"My original plan was to start working in the ICU at St. Joseph's hospital of Orange County California in July, but life kind of took me in a different direction. While at home for the summer, I started dating someone. We had grown up in the same town pretty much our whole lives but didn't start dating until this summer. We really hit it off and to make a long storyshort, I ended up moving back to Provo to be close to him (he goes to BYU).

"We got engaged on October 2nd at Sundance and we are both very happy! The big day is January 2, 2007 at the Los Angeles Temple."

Tamara is currently working at the ortho/neuro unit at UVRMC. She was excited to find out Kelly Clark and Tiffany Langton also work on her unit.

Whitney Lathen has exciting news-she is 14 weeks pregnant! She'll be 20 weeks the week of Nov. 20th and will find out if it is a boy or a girl then. The baby is due April 7th, 2007.

"Scott will graduate with his master's in civil engineering about 2-3 weeks later so it will be perfect. Then we will move wherever a good engineering job takes us ( a good chance it will be to the Northwest)."

Whitney is working the telemetry/med/surg unit at AF hospital and loves it.

Jamie Glenn switched from Georgetown's FNP program to Midwifery and Women's Health. She had visited a clinic in Utah and shadowed the doctor that practiced there and thought it was her dream job. "It's really the only thing I've felt passionate about in the entire realm of nursing."

"So I started school in the FNP program and things became more clear as I went along in my coursework: my interest was always peaked whenever we were learning about women's health topics, preconception planning, genetic counseling, etc. I really wasn't that excited about starting clinical in the FNP program because I knew I would just be doing it as a means to an end. It suddenly occured to me, "Why don't I just specialize in women's health from the get-go?" That way, I could have the job I wanted sooner, I would have a lot more intensive knowledge and training in women's health, and I would be passionate about EVERYTHING I was learning!

"I made the switch (luckily we have three classes that are core classes for all NP students this semester, so I only had two new classes to add) about a week ago, and I have wondered why I didn't realize this before. It just fits. It's exactly who I am. Kinda crazy that I had to find it in such a roundabout way, but now that I'm here, I just have so much peace about my life and have so much more enthusiasm about my education."

Jamie will still be done by next December (2007), except she'll be sitting for the WHNP certification later because she's not about to try to do two crazy certification tests back to back.

"The last semester of the program is like our BYU capstone, except there is absolutely no classroom requirement, which basically means I can choose anywhere I want (that will agree to contract with Georgetown) and do a full-time (unpaid) internship for my last 4 months of school. Most people are offered jobs at the places where they do their "integration." If I can learn some Spanish between now and this summer, I might go with some of the other midwifery students to a 6-week experience in Ecuador for midwives."

Danielle Perona and her husband Matt moved out to San Francisco in July to start her job at California Pacific Medical Center!

"I work in the Medical Surgical ICU and its challenging! There is so much to know and sometimes I get overwhelmed. My managers and charge nurses however tell me that I'm doing a very good job, so that's cool. Being in San Francisco I see some crazy patients! You would definitely not get these kind of patients at American Fork Hospital! The diversity is really cool though. I'd say that 2/3 of my patients don't speak English or English is their second language. I was used to only using Spanish in the hospital, but it would be more beneficial for me to speak Mandrin, Cantonese or Russian than Spanish. Crazy but I love it. I'm learning how to ask certain things in these languages.

"Matt started his job in the Financial District in San Francisco. He works for PriceWaterhouseCoopers accounting firm. We stayed with Matt's parents in the suburbs until Matt's job started in September because rent is outrageous so we needed the dual income. It was fun, but an hour and a half commute each way, so I was glad when we finally moved to the city in September. Now we live in the city in the coolest apartment, in the coolest location! I am totally loving city life! I'm an adult! When did that happen? It's nice to see Matt after work and to be able to do fun things together besides studying for school! :).

"Life is great and we're having a blast. I miss all of you guys and hope everyone is doing well. Feel free to call or email me to catch up! 801-718-4282, danielleperona@gmail.com. Oh, and if you're ever in San Francisco, you have a free place to stay!"

Susan Hardy started a Family Nurse Practicioner program at University of Pennsylvania's School of Nursing. Her husband Davis is teaching in a Philadelphia School District.

"We are picking up our lives on the total opposite coast than where we currently reside. Life recently has been busy as we try to find housing, reliable transportation ( We do not think our cars will make it out there so now I have my eye on a beautiful Toyota Tacoma truck) and a job for David using only the Internet! (Thank goodness for that!!)

"We have talk to a few people living out there currently; all of them have been very positive and supportive of our move (Thank goodness for the Church). The ward that make up that area are very young ( The oldest person in the ward is the bishop and he is 36) there are many students who attended many of the schools and lots stay at home moms with over 30 kids under the age of 4 (Jarom will be thrilled!!). The bishop's wife told me they are a high baptizing ward with over 90 baptisms last year. I am excited to go on splits with the missionaries and serve is rigorous challenging callings (such as the nursery (that is where I want to be).

"We are both very nervous about finding a home, using the public transportation systems (I have never even been on a city bus, and now I will be learning to use the trolley, subway, taxi and the bus), paying for my tuition, childcare and everything else that comes with moving across the country for a new adventure."

Their adventure to the East Coast started the second week of August.
